Something about Tea and Spices pair so nicely.  Don't get me wrong, a nice simple, plain cup of tea is fantastic but sometimes it's nice to spice things up, no pun intended.

At Alakaban we offer spices, directly from Sri Lanka.  One majorly sought after spice we have is Ceylon Cinnamon.  It is one of the healthiest spices in the world and has been used in traditional medicine for many different things.

Cinnamon Types

There are really only two types of cinnamon, Cassia Cinnamon and Ceylon Cinnamon.  Many people refer to Cassia as the "fake" cinnamon, naturally making Ceylon Cinnamon the "real" cinnamon.  The type of cinnamon you find in supermarkets is most likely Cassia as 90% of the cinnamon imported into the U.S. is Cassia.

Ceylon Cinnamon is lighter brown, softer, harder to find, sweeter tasting, but sadly it is more expensive due to all the above.  Cassia Cinnamon is cheaper, tastes slightly more bitter and alarmingly has a toxic flavouring substance in it.  This flavouring substance is called "Coumarin" and typically Cassia contains 1000 times more of this compared to real cinnamon.
